I Started Physical Therapy

Since going to the doctor for my knee, and getting the shot I have felt great!  I feel like my knee is better.  The doctor also ordered physical therapy for me.  I really didn't want to go as I felt I didn't need it for my knee, but the shot gives you a false sense of security that all is well.  All is not well.

I ended up going as I had the appointment and even though there is a ton of snow in our town I made it, and I'm glad I did.  The PT said that my hip and knee are weak.  He also said that I have inflammation around the knee.  I didn't think I did since it wasn't swollen at all.

First order of business was using an ultrasound machine.  The ultrasound was not for diagnostic, but for the inflammation.  I wasn't sure how it worked, but I just read an article.  It's a good read and informative.  http://physicaltherapyweb.com/therapeutic-ultrasound/

After the ultrasound, the PT did several things to figure out what my strength was.  Needless to say I'm a weakling.  Not only is my knee weak, but so is my hip.  He did a bunch of stretching to my leg.  It was a bit uncomfortable having my leg stretched over his shoulder.  I guess because I'm a pretty private person.

He then had me do several exercises.  By the time we were done, my leg was tired!!!  He also gave me a paper with exercises on it that I am to do at home.

I got to thinking that had I exercised on a regular basis perhaps this wouldn't have happened at this age.  It would have happened as I was destined to get osteoarthritis, but I might have been able to prolong the inevitable.  It is what it is.  I have to get off my butt and do what it takes to make things better.  I need to lose weight, and exercise my knee so that I can work my job for a year until I can get enough paid time off to have it replaced.

Just another reason to eat a plant based diet.  I have made the commitment to stop eating vegan junk food.  There is a ton of food out there that are vegan, but it's not necessarily good for you.  They are laden with sugar and fat and salt.  A whole foods (not processed) plant based diet with little to no oil, salt or sugar is what is best.  Is it going to be easy?  NO, but what it boils down to is do I really want to get better?  The answer is yes.  I will put off surgery as long as possible.

Here is to a new year and a new lifestyle!  I have 50 pounds to lose, and I will lose it!  I'm determined to get it done.  How about you?  What are your goals for the new year?  Pick something that isn't too hard, but will improve  your life greatly.  We all can improve, and we all can do it together!  None of us are alone.  Let's do this!

Naomi, I had both knees replaced last year, I know where you are coming from. The whole exercise/therapy gig, pre and post op. In the interest of building my optimum health, I am currently not only doing Jane Birch's Discovering the Word of Wisdom 10-day Jumpstart, I latched onto Engine 2's 7-day Challenge, doing them concurrently. If you want a sane way to lose weight and change your health, check out The Engine 2 Seven-day Rescue Diet - Rip Esselstyn. It's newly published, has emaculate credentials, and the easiest way of no-recpe food prep you can imagine! A working gal's dream for improving health! The FB page has over 6000 people world wide participating in this 7-day adventure, it's awesome and inspiring. Great support and sharing! If you want more info, I can send some your way. I think the book is too new to be in libraries, but I'm requesting my local library to purchase it (among others on my list that they said to give them!) for their growing healthy eating section!

Thank you Candy! I'm on the facebook group, but haven't really looked at it. Life is so busy! I need to get the book as well. Maybe I will get it on kindle and it won't be so expensive. I do have the Lean and Clean ebook from High Carb Hannah, and I'm enjoying that as well! There are so many good recipes out there! Not enough hours in the day! lol
